Pueblo and Greeley RR 4-4-0 American Type

In its infancy, the S.M.P.G. R.R. started simply as the Pueblo & Greeley Railroad company. Beginning just years after the completion of the Transcontinental railroad, (1876, right around the territory officially becoming the 38th state of the USA, Colorado) the railroad started up north in Greeley, and began construction south to Pueblo, with Denver conveniently along the way. With a direct link between the Union Pacific up north to the state Capitol of Denver (alongside the then Denver Pacific RR,), the P&G rapidly became an artery for commerce, and much like the fledgling Denver, South Park & Pacific narrow gauge railroad to the west, revenue freight and passengers were being hauled during construction to the south, securing the line's completion to the southern point of Pueblo, Colorado a few years later. (And subsequently, a link to the massive CF&I steel mill built in 1881.)

The main motive power on the line during the later 1870s, was a group of eighteen stately 4-4-0 American type steam locomotives, #2-19. Purchased from Baldwin in several consecutively larger orders, the 4-4-0s were the the line's main motive power for several years alongside 0-4-4T Forney #1, which was assembled by the P&G after borrowing motive power regularly from Union Pacific. (Hence explaining the presence of Congdon smokestacks - the DSP&P railroad had plenty of involvement with U.P. as well.) The 4-4-0s were joined by a group of twenty more modern 4-4-0s decades later, half of which were converted into tank engines, thus cementing the 4-4-0s as a highly effective and desired wheel arrangement with subsequent construction and usage after the locomotive type slowly began to fall out of favor with other railroads...
