Feeling a need for a step up from the teeny little 0-4-0s on the roster, the SMPG RR designed and built 30 of these Rogers-inspired saddle tank 2-4-2Ts in three consecutive batches. In light of the unfortunate declared failure of a mainline engine Baldwin's Demonstrator 2-4-2 'Columbia' turned out to be, tall driving wheels and high speeds were quickly tossed out of the equation.

Designed to be as useful and economical as possible in any task requiring light and compact motive power, these locomotives sport graciously sized saddle tanks, a deceptively deep coal bunker, and a spacious cab for crew comfort. Experimental power reversers and cleverly overbuilt leading and trailing truck assemblies make direction changing and switching operations speedy and efficient as well.
